Global Scholars Program

In partnership with Illumina

The ASHG–Illumina Global Scholars Program reflects a shared commitment to expanding access, advancing discovery, and empowering the next generation of leaders in human genetics and genomics. Bringing together a dynamic cohort of 30 scientists from across Brazil, the program created a powerful space for connection, learning, and innovation.

Through a thoughtfully designed hybrid experience, scholars engaged in both virtual and in-person programming—building technical expertise while forging meaningful, lasting professional relationships across the region.

A Collaborative Learning Journey

Participants took part in a series of interactive virtual sessions designed to encourage dialogue, peer exchange, and real-world application of cutting-edge genomic research. The program emphasized collaboration—creating opportunities for scholars to learn not only from leading experts, but from one another.

Advancing Science Through Journal Clubs

The program launched with a four-part journal club series featuring research from the American Journal of Human Genetics (AJHG) and Human Genetics and Genomics Advances (HGGA). Each session explored high-impact topics aligned with Genomas Brasil priorities, guided by senior researchers who facilitated rich, discussion-driven learning.

Key topics included:

  • The global impact of clinical genome sequencing in diagnosing rare genetic diseases

  • Advancing polygenic risk scores for diverse, multi-ancestry populations

  • Discoveries in cancer predisposition through the All of Us Research Program

  • The role of non-coding variants in GATA4 regulatory function

Expanding Possibilities in Rare Disease Diagnostics

In a live webinar presented by an Illumina scientist, scholars explored how multiomics approaches are transforming rare disease diagnosis. By integrating exome and genome data, participants examined new pathways to improve diagnostic yield and deepen understanding of complex conditions, highlighting the future of precision medicine.

From Innovation to Application: In-Person Capstone

The program culminated in an immersive, in-person capstone event in Brazil for a half-day of hands-on learning, networking, and idea exchange. From the transformative role of artificial intelligence in genomics to strategies for building and managing large-scale genomic databases, global perspectives were central to the experience, with insights from leading genomic initiatives:

  • Brazil

    University of São Paulo

  • Finland

    FinnGen, University of Helsinki

  • United States

    All of Us Research Program

Building a Lasting Community

Beyond technical knowledge, the program fostered a vibrant network of emerging leaders dedicated to advancing genomics across Latin America. By connecting talent, expertise, and opportunity, the ASHG–Illumina Scholars Program is helping shape a more inclusive and globally connected future for human genetics.
