Primary Research Interests:

Molecular genetics and systems biology with a focus on pediatric applications, including newborn disease screening, diagnosis and treatment of disorders such as:

  • Sickle Cell Disease

  • Cystic Fibrosis

  • Severe combined immunodeficiency (SCID) disorder

  • Cytogenetic disorders


 

Biography:

Edward R.B. McCabe, M.D., Ph.D., serves as Executive Chair of the Department of Pediatrics at UCLA Medical School. He is responsible for establishing the Mattel Children's Hospital at UCLA, where he currently serves as Physician-in-Chief. McCabe also directs the Pediatric Research, Innovation and Mentoring Experience (PRIME) Program, the Human and Molecular Development Postdoctoral Training Program and the UCLA Center for Society, the Individual and Genetics.

Dr. McCabe moved to UCLA from the Robert J. Kleberg, Jr. Clinical Center in the Institute for Molecular Genetics at Baylor College of Medicine. Under his leadership (1986-1994), the center established an international reputation in prenatal, clinical and biochemical genetics. Dr. McCabe also founded the Baylor Mental Retardation Research Center, the Baylor Molecular Genetics Diagnostic Laboratory Postdoctoral Training Program, and the Baylor Child Health Research Center. He developed molecular genetic strategies for the diagnosis of Sickle Cell Disease, Cystic Fibrosis, and Medium Chain Acyl-CoA Dehydrogenase Deficiency in newborns and was a pioneer in developing DNA extraction techniques from blood collected on filter paper.

Prior to his tenure at Baylor, Dr. McCabe was a member of the University of Colorado faculty, where he served as Director of the Metabolic Diseases Clinic beginning in 1977.

Dr. McCabe has established and continues to direct the Pediatric Research, Innovation, and Mentoring Experience (PRIME) Program, which encourages human and molecular development research. He is President-Elect of the American College of Medical Genetics, Chair of the Secretary's Advisory Committee on Genetic Testing, and a member of the Health and Human Services Select Review Panel on Newborn Screening for the Maternal and Child Health Bureau (MCHB). He co-founded the Section on Genetics of the American Academy of Pediatrics and has chaired its Executive Committee. He has chaired the Scientific Advisory Committee on Neural Tube Defects of the Texas Department of Health and the Basil O'Connor Award Committee for the March of Dimes Birth Defects Foundation. He co-chaired the May, 1999 AAP Newborn Screening Taskforce sponsored by MCHB. He is a member of the American Board of Medical Genetics, for which he has served as both Vice President and President. He has been a member of the National Advisory Child Health and Human Development Council of the National Institutes of Health, the Committee on Certification, Subcertification and Recertification of the American Board of Medical Specialties, and the Medical Genetics Residency Review Committee for the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education.

Dr. McCabe received his B.S. in Biology from Johns Hopkins University, and his Ph.D. and M.D. from the University of Southern California. He completed his Pediatrics Residency at the University of Minnesota Hospitals.
