Communications Committee
(Ad hoc)
Composition and Tenure
The ad hoc ASHG Communications Committee shall consist of about a dozen members, which will include a diverse cross-section of the Society’s membership (i.e.,
regular members who are genetic scientists, clinicians, and genetic counselors, trainee members, PR representatives from other genetics organizations, etc.). The
committee members will be appointed for three- year terms (initially staggered), with up to three new members to be appointed each year. No member of the Committee
may serve more than two consecutive terms.
Mandate
The ASHG Communications Committee will serve as an ad hoc “advisory committee” group. The Communications Committee shall provide feedback and recommendations to the
staff and Board of Directors, and participate in the development of Web and print materials, Web 2.0/social media activities, key messages, and strategic planning
for ASHG’s Communication/PR programs and initiatives, press events, media outreach, public health campaigns, etc., that are intended to promote and increase
awareness of human genetics (and the Society’s role in the field) by the media, the general public, and genetics professionals.
The Committee shall focus on communications among ASHG membership, and on communicating basic genetic knowledge, its advances, and communicating its applications to
key groups, including policy makers, advocates, educators and students, the media, and the public at large.
