The emphasis of the training programs in human genetics is on producing excellent, well-rounded genetics professionals, and each program includes participating in classroom, seminar, and patient care settings, as well as laboratory research experiences. The Graduate Program leading to an M.S. (http://graduate.umaryland.edu/degree_programs/programs/prog_human.html) or Ph.D (http://genetics.umaryland.edu) degree in human genetics provides formal coursework in basic genetics, cytogenetics, biochemical genetics, genetic epidemiology, molecular genetics, and clinical genetics. Research opportunities include projects in basic and applied research in all human/medical genetics disciplines. The Master's in Genetic Counseling program (http://medschool.umaryland.edu/mgc) is an intensive, clinically-oriented, two-year program providing a strong foundation in basic and medical genetics while addressing the psychosocial and ethical issues inherent in this field. Students participate in diverse clinical and laboratory rotations throughout the Baltimore/Washington area. An independent study is required.
