The Hospital for Sick Children (HSC) is the main Toronto center for training in human genetics. The Department of Genetics at HSC consists of a clinical division and a research division. The former is also a division of Paediatrics in the Hospital; the latter is part of the Research Institute of the Hospital. Participating faculty members hold University of Toronto appointments in the Departments of Molecular and Medical Genetics, Paediatrics, Biochemistry and Clinical Biochemistry. The Department of Molecular and Medical Genetics has major graduate training programs including one in genetic counselling. The Division of Clinical and Metabolic Genetics provides comprehensive training in all aspects of medical genetics in the setting of a large tertiary care institution. Disease-oriented research programs focus on cystic fibrosis, muscle diseases, mitochondrial cytopathies, several metabolic storage diseases, overgrowth syndromes, eye disorders, and microdeletion 22 syndromes. In addition, major research programs examine genome organization (chromosome 7 mapping), disease gene isolation, growth regulation and oncogenesis, retinal development, stem cell differentiation, and gene therapy.
