Training in Human Genetics is through a broad-based program offered jointly by the Departments of Pediatrics, Genetics, Internal Medicine and Obstetrics at the University of Pennsylvania and the Human Genetics and Molecular Biology and Metabolism Divisions of the Department of Pediatrics at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia. The program combines the advantages of an enormous clinical practice with a large, well-rounded research program. The fellowship is tailored to each trainee's background, interests, and goals. It includes ample opportunity for clinical experience on inpatient and outpatient services, cytogenetics, biochemical genetics, and molecular diagnostics. Research training is available in the laboratories of over 100 faculty and encompasses a broad range of investigations into problems in human and medical genetics. Formal instruction is offered through seminars, literature clubs, and courses at the University of Pennsylvania. The program is designed primarily for M.D. and Ph.D. fellows who desire thorough clinical grounding and extensive laboratory research training to prepare for academic careers in human genetics.
