The Human and Medical Genetics Graduate and Postgraduate Program for Southern Alberta is based in the Department of Medical Genetics, Faculty of Medicine and the Population Genomics Research Group. Faculty members hold appointments in a number of departments, including Medical Genetics, Pediatrics, Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, Community Health Sciences, Ophthalmology, Pathology and Laboratory Medicine, Clinical Neurosciences, and Biological Sciences.
Graduate and postdoctoral research training is available in cytogenetics, molecular genetics, biochemical genetics, population genetics and teratology. Potential supervisors have a broad range of interests including: behavioural genetics, developmental genetics, population genetics, dysmorphology, ocular genetics, cancer genetics, gene discovery in genetic isolates, inherited metabolic disorders, molecular genetics, chromosomal and molecular analysis of human sperm. Students may choose from a wide range of courses offered by various departments in the University. Clinical training leading to eligibility for certification by the Canadian College of Medical Geneticists or specialization in Medical Genetics in a five-year residency program leading to RCPSC certification is available in this program. This active program, based at the Alberta Children's Hospital, services the entire southern part of the province and offers the trainee exposure to a broad range of genetic problems, including specialty clinics in antenatal genetics, neurogenetics, ophthalmic genetics, connective tissue disorders, cancer genetics, and inherited metabolic disease.
