| The training program is located in the Department of Pediatrics within the College of Medicine in collaboration with the Interdepartmental Program in Genetics, which is a Ph.D.-granting program including emphasis in human genetics. The College of Nursing, in collaboration with the College of Medicine, offers a masters degree in nursing with program emphasis in genetic counseling. Participating faculty members hold appointments in the Departments of Biochemistry, Biology, Medicine, Nursing, Obstetrics, Pathology, Pediatrics, and Psychiatry. A variety of courses is available leading to Ph.D. and M.D./Ph.D. degrees with particular emphasis in clinical genetics, biochemical genetics, molecular genetics, cytogenetics, psychiatric genetics, and prenatal diagnosis. The genetic counseling program in the nursing masters-level curriculum includes emphasis in clinical and didactic courses for nurses interested in genetic counseling and genetic health care. The University of Iowa acts as the center for the statewide genetic counseling program and as such provides outstanding opportunities for a clinical experience as well as exposure to antenatal testing and a variety of specialty clinics. | |
