The graduate program in human genetics at the University of Minnesota is organized through the Institute of Human Genetics and provides predoctoral and postdoctoral training in human and medical genetics, and training for genetic counseling at the Master of Science level. The Institute of Human Genetics supports multiple programs including medical genetics and gene therapy, genetic counseling, neurogenetics, and cancer genetics and has extensive interactions with the basic science and clinical departments of the medical school including Biochemistry, Genetics, Cell Biology and Development, Pathobiology, Microbiology, Medicine and Pediatrics. The program is broadly based and offers advanced training in all areas of human/medical genetics and molecular biology. Pre- and post-doctoral research training stresses basic molecular problems of human genetics. The graduate program in genetic counseling includes course work in genetics, psychosocial counseling and medical ethics as well as extensive clinical experience and clinical research experience. Seminars, clinical case conferences, journal clubs and hospital conferences are available to those training in all areas. The interdiciplinary makeup of the Institute of Human Genetics provides an energetic, interactive atmosphere for comprehensive training in human genetics.
