The Graduate Program in Genetic Counseling at Northwestern University is an 18-month program, consisting of: 1) coursework on the science of genetics, on the art of genetic counseling and on psychosocial development as related to human genetics; 2) clinical placements beginning in the second quarter; and, 3) an original research project. Course work is specifically designed and conducted for genetic counseling students and includes courses on basic genetics, cancer genetics, teratology, stages of psychosocial development, women's health, disability studies and ethics. Other educational experiences include journal club, genetic lecture series, and weekly case conferences. Clinical rotations provide broad experiences with other genetic counselors and medical geneticists in a variety of clinical settings. Each student conducts a research project of their own choosing.
