This training program is centered in an autonomous Department of Human genetics within the School of Medicine of a major urban university. Participating faculty members hold joint appointments in the Departments of Biochemistry, Biology, Medicine, Pediatrics, Obstetrics, Pathology, Psychiatry, and Microbiology. The Department offers a full range of didactic courses and seminars leading to the Ph.D. and masters degrees in human genetics and a masters degree in genetic counseling. In addition, the Department offers a joint degree program with a masters degree in genetic counseling and Ph.D. in human genetics. It also provides pre- and postdoctoral research and training opportunities in a wide variety of genetic disciplines. The program allows graduate trainees to obtain a meaningful exposure to clinical genetics on hospital rounds and in department-sponsored genetic counseling, prenatal testing and specialty clinics, while M.D. postdoctoral fellows have many opportunities to interact with Ph.D. geneticists in formal courses and research projects. Existing population-based registries on twins, birth defects, and hereditary deafness are unique resources for ongoing research projects.
