Full-time course work will require 22 months of study encompassing medical genetics, psychosocial theory, counseling techniques, clinical and molecular genetics, and cytogenetics. A major element is practical experience providing students with supervised actual experience in clinical genetics, prenatal diagnosis counseling, cancer genetics counseling, clinical metabolic genetics, and laboratory techniques in cytogenetics, molecular genetics. The total program time is 48 semester hours.

In addition to the classroom and practical experience, each student will be required to conduct original research. The result of this research will be a paper that would be appropriate for submitting to a refereed journal. The intent of this project is to enable the student to learn to pursue a chosen topic through the literature to an original hypothesis, collection and analysis of data, thesis preparation and defense. Actual submission to a journal will be encouraged, but not required.
