Fellowship training in medical genetics and residency training in clinical genetics is offered by the Division of Medical Genetics, Department of Pediatrics. The Pediatric faculty represents a spectrum of research and clinical expertise. In addition, faculty from the Departments of Genetics, Ob/Gyn, Medicine and Surgery offer clinical rotations and act as research preceptors. Research interests include: Molecular mechanisms of glycogen storage diseases, lysosomal storage diseases, fragile X syndrome, inborn errors of metabolism, linkage analysis of mendelian and complex traits, genetic epidemiology, gene expression, gene and enzyme replacement therapy, cancer, and cytogenetics. MD clinical genetics residents spend the 1st 18 months in clinical activities in the genetics clinic, inpatient consultations, metabolic clinic, and specialty clinic rotations. The 2nd half of the 2nd year and an optional 3rd year are devoted to research. Ph.D fellows complete training in their subspecialty, do clinical rotations and perform research. DUMC is a major referral center seeing a wide variety of patients.
