The goal of this program is to train individuals who have the potential to become leaders in the field of medical genetics. The program emphasizes the role of research in medical genetics and prepares trainees for a career in academic medicine. Translating discoveries at the lab bench to the patient setting and the correlating clinical observation to molecular pathophysiology are major themes of the program. Training in clinical genetics is available for applicants holding an MD degree and two years of clinical experience. Combined Pediatrics/Genetics and Internal Medicine/Genetics 5-year training programs are also available for superior post-medical school candidates. Rotations in inpatient, consult, prenatal and cancer genetic clinical services and exposure to the outpatient setting in weekly clinics at Johns Hopkins Hospital provide core experiences in medical genetics. Postdoctoral fellowships that focus on the laboratory aspects of cytogenetics, biochemical or molecular genetic abnormalities resulting in human disease are also available.
