The UBC Department of Medical Genetics offers a thesis-based Ph.D. and M.Sc. degree program. CCMG-accredited postdoctoral training is provided in clinical genetics, cytogenetics, biochemical genetics and molecular genetics. Research opportunities and courses are available to graduate students and postdoctoral fellows in a variety of subdisciplines of human genetics including molecular biology, clinical genetics, developmental genetics, cancer genetics, genome analysis, genetic epidemiology, population genetics, cytogenetics, and biochemical genetics. The Department's clinical service is one of the largest and most comprehensive in North America. (A Masters level, ABGC-accredited Genetic Counselling Training Program is also available - see separate listing under "Genetic Counselling".) Students and postdoctoral fellows have many opportunities to interact with both M.D. and Ph.D. human geneticists and genetic counsellors in formal courses, research projects and clinical situations. The training program is centered in the Department of Medical Genetics, but the participating faculty members hold cross appointments in several other departments including genetics, pathology, pediatrics, medicine, and obstetrics and gynecology.
