| The Genetic Counseling Program at the USC School of Medicine was founded in 1985 as a southeastern regional training program for genetic counselors. The program, based in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, is served by an outstanding faculty and network of clinical rotation facilities. The South Carolina Commission on Higher Education awarded the program a rare "Commendation for Excellence" in 1991 and again in 1998 citing program strengths: namely, its enthusiastic faculty, thesis research, and students who have proven to be professionally active after graduation. The curriculum includes course work, clinical experience, and a Master of Science thesis toward the goal of graduating genetic counselors who will be eligible for certification by the American Board of Genetic Counseling (ABGC). The Program was most recently reaccredited in 2006 for the maximum eight year period. The curriculum includes 53 credit hours. Of these, 39 hours are devoted to classroom study, the majority of which are designed specifically for the Genetic Counseling Program. Internships in the regional genetic centers provide eight credit hours, and six hours of credit are awarded for Master of Science thesis research. |
