The graduate and postgraduate training programs in human and medical genetics and genetic counseling are based in the Department of Genetics and Center for Human Genetics in the School of Medicine and at University Hospitals of Cleveland. The Center has strength in medical genetics, dysmorphology, adult onset genetic disorders, cancer genetics, metabolic genetics, neurogenetics, genetic counseling, clinical cytogenetics and DNA diagnostics, and prenatal diagnosis. Training opportunities leading to a Ph.D. and combined M.D./Ph.D. degrees and postdoctoral opportunities (M.D. fellowship, Ph.D. postdoctoral, and combined residencies) in both human and model system genetics research are available. The predoctoral program emphasizes molecular studies of human disease; chromosome structure and function; developmental genetics in humans, mouse, and Drosophila; molecular and genetic epidemiology of complex genetic disease; gene therapy; prositional cloning; and genome research. The Genetic Counseling Training Program, leading to a master's degree in genetics, includes didactic course work, extensive clinical training, laboratory experience and original research as part of a master's thesis. There are extensive collaborations with a number of other Departments and Centers.
