This postdoctoral opportunity is sponsored by the National Human Genome Research Institute (NHGRI). It is a cooperative effort including clinical branches and research laboratories at the NHGRI and other Institutes at the National Institutes of Health, as well as academic medical centers in Washington DC and Baltimore.
The clinical rotations comprise a total of 18 months, including outpatient clinics in general medical genetics, cancer genetics, ophthalmologic genetics, pediatric and perinatal genetics, endocrine genetics and clinical laboratory rotations in cytogenetics, clinical molecular genetics and clinical biochemical genetics. Fellows select three months of elective clinical experience. Eighteen months of research experience is required. Additional time in the cytogenetics, molecular genetics or biochemical genetics laboratory is necessary for individuals seeking subspecialty certification in these fields. The program is designed for MD and PhD fellows who desire broad clinical training and intensive research experience to prepare for academic careers in human genetics leading to board certification in clinical genetics, clinical cytogenetics, clinical molecular genetics, clinical biochemical genetics or PhD in medical genetics.
