Postgraduate training is based in the Department of Human Genetics in the Faculty of Medicine. The faculty members have broad academic interests that include genomics, genetic epidemiology, cancer genetics, neurogenetics, genodermatoses, behavioural genetics, biochemical genetics, cytogenetics, syndromology, the genetics of common disease, and gene therapy.

Postgraduate training programs aim to meet the requirements of a variety of certifying bodies; Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, College des Medecins du Quebec, Canadian College of Medical Geneticists, and American Board of Genetic Counseling.

Clinical training programs include rotations at the member hospitals of the McGill University Health Centre (Montreal General Hospital, Royal Victoria Hospital, Montreal Children's Hospital, Montreal Neurological Hospital), the Jewish General Hospital and the Shriner's Hospital. These give broad exposure to the whole range of genetic diseases in both pediatric and adult populations.

The Department also offers the M.Sc. in Genetic Counselling and M.Sc./Ph.D. research programs.
