This is an interdepartmental program involving the Departments of Biology, Educational Psychology and Counseling, and Special Education. The two-year program leads to a Master of Science degree in Genetic Counseling. The program integrates intensive course work and clinical experience in a wide variety of clinical settings in the Los Angeles area and in the San Fernando Valley. Course work includes human genetics, principles and practice of genetic counseling, medical genetics, dysmorphology, biochemical genetics, cytogenetics, molecular diagnostics, cancer genetics, treatment of genetic disorders, normal and atypical development, how cultural differences may affect counseling, and ethical, legal and social issues in genetics. The Program is designed to prepare students for the certification examination conducted by the American Board of Genetic Counseling, and for licensure. There is an emphasis on developing an empathetic, effective and professional demeanor with the ability to work well as a member of a team. The Program prepares students for genetic counseling careers in a variety of settings.
