This program provides clinical and research training to individuals holding doctoral degrees. Clinical trainees should hold an M.D. degree and have completed a residency in a primary care specialty. The clinical program is flexible in length (minimum 2 years) depending on the individual's desire to incorporate an extended research component. The program includes the integrated efforts of faculty members holding appointments in the UCSD Departments of Pediatrics, Reproductive Medicine, and Medicine. The clinical program has a strong focus on dysmorphology, teratology, prenatal diagnosis, and biochemical genetics. Ample opportunities for genetic counseling are provided. Clinical cytogenetics is also available to those holding Ph.D. degrees. Didactic experiences include weekly conferences as well as courses offered by the genetics faculty through the medical and graduate schools. Major research focuses are in the areas of mechanisms of morphogenesis, behavioral teratology, biochemical genetics, cancer genetics, and gene therapy. Applicants should send a letter of introduction specifying the type of training desired and areas of special interest. For individuals interested in non-clinical research experiences, post-doctoral fellowships are available through the Department of Biology at UCSD and the Departments of Medicine and Pediatrics in the School of Medicine, UCSD. These departments/investigators should be contacted directly.
