The Department of Medical Genetics within the University of Alberta and the Capital Health Authority, (Acting Chair: Dr. Rachel Wevrick) has an integrated clinical and research space and a Molecular Diagnostic laboratory with modern equipment. Research areas include developmental genetics, ocular genetics, dysmorphology, biochemical genetics, metal transport dieases, genetic liver disease, imprinting, prenatal diagnosis, molecular cytogenetics, and genome mapping and a robust graduate program in these areas has been established. Links exist with other related groups within the University, including the basic genetics group in the Faculty of Science, the molecular immunology group in Biochemistry, and the molecular oncology research group. A full range of clinical genetics services is provided to the approximately 1.5 million population of Northern Alberta.
