Fundraiser for Science Education in New Orleans

Special Events and Social Events

Opening Mixer

Registrants and their guests are invited to attend the Opening Mixer on Monday evening, October 9 from 8:00 PM until 11:00 PM at the Hilton New Orleans Riverside. All registrants are encouraged to attend the mixer. It offers a relaxed atmosphere in which attendees can become acquainted and reacquainted with colleagues. Light snacks and cash bars will be provided.

Trainee-Mentor Luncheon

Sponsored by the ASHG Information and Education Committee, the Trainee-Mentor Luncheon is scheduled for Tuesday, October 10, 2006, at 11:30 AM in the Morial Convention Center. This event provides a wonderful opportunity for students in the field of human genetics to sit and chat informally with senior members of the Society about career goals, achievements, training programs, and many other career options within the various disciplines of genetics. This year we have made a special effort to include mentors who are active in a variety of fields including executives in private industry, editors of scientific journals and journalists as well as academicians, professors, clinicians, genetic counselors. The luncheon is held on the first day of the meeting so that students can continue their discussions with these mentors at some other time during the course of the meeting. Trainees at any level (graduate students, postdoctoral fellows and clinical fellows) are invited to attend.

The cost for the luncheon is $15 USD per trainee. Seats may be reserved only by registering in advance by the early registration deadline of August 25. Tickets will be mailed with all details before the meeting. Tickets are non-refundable.

Mentors are chosen for this event by the chair of the Information and Education Committee. For those chosen to serve as mentors, lunch is complimentary. (NOTE: Mentors should not order tickets for themselves when completing the online registration form.)

Curbstone Consultations:  Review and Discussion of Unique Cases - Convention Center, Room 239

Especially for Clinicians and Counselors - Better than Ever!

On Tuesday, October 10, 11:30 AM until 1:00 PM, and on Thursday, October 12, 11:30 AM until 1:00 PM, Curbstone Consultations provides an opportunity for registrants to present cases to a group of expert clinical geneticists. Cases may be diagnostic dilemmas, or consultation may be sought for confirmation of a suspected diagnosis. The setting allows discussion of unusual cases during a designated session rather than during scientific sessions or by "cornering" specific clinicians at other times. The consultants all have expertise in dysmorphology. Additional special expertise is indicated below, and includes skeletal dysplasia, metabolic disorders and cancer predisposition syndromes.

Format change: In order to allow more experts and registrants to participate in the discussion, the presentation format has changed. Each case will be presented using PowerPoint slides, with a limit of six slides and three minutes per presentation. Discussion will follow, by the expert panel and the audience. Audience participation is encouraged!

The discussion for each case will be limited to five minutes, allowing a minimum of eleven cases to be reviewed in each 90 minute session. Please load your case onto the computer before the session begins and label each file with the presenter’s name.

Schedule:
Tuesday, 11:30 AM–1:00 PM Area of special interest
Cyndy Curry dysmorphology
Marilyn Jones dysmorphology, clefting
David Rimoin skeletal dysplasia
Anne Slavotinek dysmorphology, diaphragmatic hernia
Karen Gripp dysmorphology

Thursday, 11:30 AM–1:00 PM

Curbstone Consultations is organized and moderated by Karen Gripp.

Trainee Program:  Can I Get There from Here?  Different Career Paths for Scientists

This program is a special session on Tuesday, October 10, 8:00 to 10:00 PM (Room 243 of the Morial Convention Center), for graduate students and post-doctoral fellows organized by the newly formed ad Hoc Postdoctoral Committee. ASHG trainees interested in an event designed to broaden their knowledge regarding rewarding careers ranging from laboratory research to patent law should attend. A keynote address will examine the challenges of the traditional research career pathway as well as other professional prospects for PhD geneticists. Members of the biotechnology, patent law, clinical diagnostic, academic research, policy and journalism communities will describe what it takes for PhD recipients to be successful in different scientific careers.  Finally, a network session will be open to all participants to discuss these careers and a variety of others including education, public health, and science writing. The event is limited to 250 attendees and requires a special registration in addition to your ASHG Meeting Registration. Please go to the Trainee event home page to learn more about it and to sign up.

Publications Workshop/Boxed Supper: Demystifying the Road to Publication

Publishing experimental results is a central goal of most researchers, and although the practice is common enough, the process is often filled with frustration and disappointment. Scientists want to be published in the most influential places, but do not want to waste a great deal of time on submissions to journals for which their work is not appropriate. At this session, the editors from three prominent genetics journals will offer some guidelines to follow during the publication and review process. The Publications workshop will be held on Wednesday from 6:30 PM until 8:00 PM and includes a simple box supper. All participants must register in advance. The $15 registration fee for this workshop is not included in the meeting registration fee. Tickets are non-refundable.

Undergraduate Genetics Education Workshop

This program is a special session BEFORE the commencement of the annual meeting. The workshop will be held on Monday October 9, 2006 from 8:00am until 4:00pm. The purpose of this human genetics educational workshop is to present and discuss various topics and pedagogies relevant to those faculty teaching biology courses containing meaningful genetics content. The overarching goal is to encourage effective teaching of human genetics such that it contributes to improving the genetic literacy of all students enrolled in such classes. It assumes some participants will not be formally trained geneticists, and that even for those who are, such a venue can be illuminating for them as well. It will also strongly encourage follow-up activities and communications among all involved during the ensuing academic year.

Attendance at this workshop is free to all participants. The event is limited to 50 attendees and requires a special registration in addition to your ASHG Meeting Registration. Please go to the Undergraduate Genetics Education Home Page to learn more about it and to sign up. Breakfast and lunch will be served. Please register by August 25, 2006.
