Concurrent Education Sessions II (6-8)
SESSION 6 - Molecular Genetics of Cancer Survivorship
Hall 3
Moderator: David Malkin, Hospital for Sick Children, Toronto, Ontario, Canada
One in 500 adults is a survivor of childhood cancer, and survival rates for most adult-onset malignancies continue to improve. Along with the advances in therapy has come the realization of significant long-term morbidity and early-onset mortality related to effects of these cancer therapies. This session will present an educational overview of the potential value of genomic/genetic platforms to define susceptibilities to long-term sequelae of cancer therapy, focusing in particular on second malignancies, radiation effects, as well as pharmacogenetics as applied to drug metabolism and anthracycline cardiotoxicity. The focus of the session will consistently underscore the need to continue to engage the genetics/genomics community in developing novel approaches to study these issues, and will highlight areas wherein these technologies and science could impact treatment strategies.
10:00 AM Cancer survivorship: An introduction. Lois B. Travis, National Cancer Institute, Bethesda, MD.
10:15 AM Genetic modifiers of risk for second malignancy in cancer survivors. Louise C. Strong, M. D. Anderson Cancer Center, Houston, TX.
10:40 AM The role of genetic susceptibility in the modification of the late effects of radiotherapy. Eric J. Hall, Columbia University, New York, NY.
11:05 AM The pharmacogenetics of cancer treatment and late effects. Ching-Hon Pui, St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital, Memphis, TN.
