Curbstone Consultations: Review and Discussion of Unique Cases - Hall D

Curbstone Consultations provides an opportunity for registrants to present cases to a group of expert clinical geneticists. Cases may be diagnostic dilemmas, or consultation may be sought for confirmation of a suspected diagnosis. The setting allows discussion of unusual cases during a designated session rather than during scientific sessions or by "cornering" specific clinicians at other times. The consultants all have expertise in dysmorphology. Additional special expertise is indicated below. Individuals have the opportunity to present their cases to small teams of consultants, allowing an energetic exchange of suggestions, synergy of knowledge and development of collegial relationships. Consultants and their schedules are as follows:

Wednesday, October 26
4:30 PM-5:30 PM John Graham
  Cynthia Curry
  Marilyn Jones
  Alain Verloes
5:30 PM-6:30 PM David Rimoin - skeletal
  Andrea Superti-Furga - skeletal
  Hans Brunner
  Helga Toriello

Thursday, October 27
4:30 PM-5:30 PM Sharon Plon - cancer genetics
  Kate Nathanson - cancer genetics
  Laurie Seaver - fetal anomalies
5:30 PM-6:30 PM Lynn Bird
  Anne Slavotinek
  William Dobyns - neurologic
  Richard Kelley - metabolic

Friday, October 28
1:30 PM-2:30 PM Genetic Counselors - cancer and adult non-cancer
2:30 PM-3:30 PM Genetic Counselors - prenatal ethics and counseling

  Continuing Medical Education (CME) Credits

The Federation of American Societies for Experimental Biology (FASEB) is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) to provide continuing medical education for physicians and Ph.D. medical geneticists. FASEB and The American Society of Human Genetics (ASHG) take responsibility for the content, quality and scientific integrity of this CME activity. FASEB designates this educational activity for up to 29.75 credit hours in category 1 credit toward the AMA Physician's Recognition Award.

CME application forms are available at the ASHG Society and Membership Office in Room 150E of the Salt Palace Convention Center, or may be obtained after the meeting from the FASEB Office at 9650 Rockville Pike, Bethesda, MD 20814-3998; email to mcgovern@faseb.org. There is a $45 application fee, payable upon submission of the form. For further information, please contact the FASEB Office of Scientific Meetings and Conferences at (301) 634-7010.

ASHG Meeting Objective/Target Audience: The objective of this meeting is to provide a forum for the exchange of new research by scientists and investigators. At the completion of this meeting participants should be able to: 1) discuss the research underway and/or the current topics relevant to their areas of interest in human genetics specialty areas such as development, cancer genetics, genetic epidemiology, population genetics, clinical genetics, inborn errors of metabolism, cytogenetics, linkage mapping, polymorphisms, differentiation, gene structure and function, physical mapping, genomics, genetic counseling, pre- and perinatal genetics, genetics evolution, and ethics and genetic screening issues; 2) demonstrate a gained level of insight into the methods being used by researchers and practitioners in this field; and 3) describe a personal exposure to several stimulating areas of inquiry with speakers in related areas.

This meeting is intended for all professionals involved in teaching, diagnosis, treatment and/or research in human genetics and molecular biology, with emphasis on scientists and physicians.

Continuing Education Unit (CEU) Credits for Genetic Counselors

The American Counseling Association (ACA) will grant up to 34.25 clock hours of education or 3.4 CEUs for the 55th annual meeting of The American Society of Human Genetics. This event is co-sponsored by the ACA. ACA is approved by the National Board for Certified Counselors (NBCC) to offer up to 34.25 contact clock hours of continuing education credit. ACA adheres to NBCC continuing education guidelines. NBCC-approved contact hours will be provided by ACA. ACA offers 10 contact clock hours for every (1) continuing education unit, as approved by the American Board of Genetic Counseling.

Genetic counselors who prepaid the $30 fee via advance registration and who received a CEU credit report form by mail may return completed forms to the ASHG Society and Membership Office, Convention Center Room 150E by noon on Saturday, October 29, or mail them after the meeting to the ASHG Administrative Office, 9650 Rockville Pike, Bethesda, MD, 20814-3998.
