2018 New Initiatives and Special Features

The ASHG 2018 Annual Meeting features several new initiatives and special features to help attendees connect with the latest human genetics science – and one another – in novel, productive ways.

Exhibit Hall is Your Solutions Hub

Networking/Inspiration Lounges

These lounges, located in the Sails Pavilion and the Exhibit & Poster Hall, aim to create formal and informal opportunities for attendees to connect and discuss the meeting’s exciting research while grabbing morning coffee, lunch, or an afternoon snack. Thought leaders have been scheduled each day around specific topics and sessions as outlined below.

Stop by to discuss what you learned and share innovations and ideas for bringing it to your home laboratories or clinics. Plus, create your own discussion sessions and topics outside of the scheduled times by using #ASHG18 to spread the word.

Focused Learning Opportunities

The 2018 schedule features several new events designed to extend scientific concepts to related applications and create opportunities to engage with Society programs. These include:

Interactive Invited Sessions

Select Invited Sessions will include panel discussions in addition to traditional didactic talks. Panelists will facilitate dynamic dialogue on the latest lab practices and regulatory considerations. Come away with crucial information to take back to your lab or clinic.

Check the schedule for these special sessions and join the conversations in the room and on Twitter using #ASHG18.

Concurrent Poster Talks

Two shorter Poster Talks sessions will run concurrently to leave more time for networking with your fellow attendees. See the same top-scoring posters across a variety of topics in half the time. Arrive early to grab refreshments and check each session room for the topics being presented.

Poster Talks will take place Tuesday, October 16, from 7:00-8:00 pm.

ASHG and PGRN Joint Symposium

This special symposium, Pharmacogenomics: Rare Diseases and Rare Adverse Drug Reactions, organized jointly by ASHG and the Pharmacogenomics Research Network (PGRN), will take place on Tuesday, October 16, 1:00-4:00 pm. This session is intended to increase interactions between these two related communities and facilitate productive collaborations. This event requires a separate ticket, available on the registration form to attendees of ASHG 2018 or individually through PGRN for non-ASHG attendees.

Plan to arrive Tuesday and register early! We anticipate this event being popular and selling out quickly.

ASHG/IGES/ISCB Joint Symposium

This special symposium, Working with Big Data in the Cloud--Research and Privacy, organized jointly by ASHG, the International Genetic Epidemiology Society (IGES), and the International Society for Computational Biology (ISCB), takes place on Tuesday, October 16, 1:00-4:00 pm. This session presents an opportunity for the three communities (ASHG, IGES, and ISCB) to come together to learn and discuss the legal and ethical frameworks governing personal genome data, particularly in the cloud-computing environment, and to share best practices for operating securely in this environment while still facilitating research. This event requires a separate ticket, available on the registration form to attendees of ASHG 2018 or IGES 2018.

Plan to arrive Tuesday and register early! We anticipate this event being popular and selling out quickly.
