ASHG provides merit-based research awards for trainees (predoctoral and postdoctoral, including genetic counseling trainees) on the basis of submitted, competitive abstracts presented at the 2012 Meeting.

Criteria: Nominees must: (1) be an ASHG member and not more than six years in postdoctoral training; (2) be the first author on a submitted abstract (to be considered, trainees must check the appropriate box when submitting their abstract); (3) supply the name and e-mail address of a nominator/mentor (the nominator must be an ASHG member and must be able to verify the trainee’s work). [Note: Trainee Award applications will only be evaluated after nomination by a mentor. Trainees may not nominate themselves.]

Review and Selection: During the review process, all abstracts will be scored by the Program Committee. Semifinalists (approximately 60 awards) will receive complimentary meeting registration plus $750. Finalists (approximately 15-20) will receive an additional $250 and will have their platform or poster presentations reviewed on site by the Awards Committee to determine the winners. Winners (three predoc and three postdoc) will receive an additional $1,000.

Notification: Recipients of Trainee Research Awards will be notified in August 2012, and checks will be distributed on site in San Francisco. Overall winners will be notified at the Annual Meeting, prior to the Awards Ceremony on Saturday, November 10th.

Each September, the editorial board of the American Journal of Human Genetics selects two articles that best represent outstanding contributions to the field of genetics. The two awards are presented for the best paper published in AJHG during the previous year on which the first author was either a pre- or post-doctoral trainee and is an ASHG member. The awards are presented at the ASHG 2012 Annual Meeting with a monetary award of $1000 and a plaque. Past winners are listed on the ASHG Web site.
