Trainee Awards Program

The American Society of Human Genetics 2008
Trainee Awards will be given for “Outstanding
Trainee Research.” All Trainees who are
first authors on abstracts are encouraged to
participate!
Procedures: All applicants must
complete an abstract. Please note on the
abstract submission form whether you are
pre- or postdoctoral.
Eligibility
The Nominee must be first (i.e.,
presenting) author on an abstract submitted
for either platform or poster presentation
at the 2008 ASHG meeting. The deadline to
submit an abstract and complete the award
application is June 19, 2008.
**New for 2008**: The Nominee
must be a trainee member of ASHG. An online
membership application will be available at
the end of the submission process, or

The Nominee may not be more than six
years in postdoctoral training.
The Nominee must have performed a
major portion of the work, which must be
verified in writing by the Nominator.
The verification form is available on the
2008 abstract submission site.
The Nominator must be an active ASHG
member in good standing. Click

application. The Nominator must
complete a
form related to background
information on the work being submitted.
When the name of the nominator is entered
online, the nominator submission form will
be emailed to the nominator. This form
should be completed, no later than June
30, 2008.
Note:
Trainees are not permitted to nominate
themselves.
Notification: All finalists will be
notified in mid-September.
Review and Scoring:
Trainee abstracts will be awarded in two
steps. First the abstracts will be reviewed
and scored by the Program Committee. The top
five (5) abstracts in each category (below)
will be named semifinalists (a total of 30)
and will be awarded $300 each. Second, the
Awards Committee will review the
semifinalist abstracts and will select the
top eighteen (18). These 18 finalists will
also receive complimentary registration. Out
of those 18 finalists, the Awards Committee
will select six (6) winners (one in each
category below) to receive an additional
$200 presented at the Awards Program during
on Saturday, November 15, in Philadelphia.

FASEB Minority Travel Award Program (MARC)
Deadline - October 17,
2008
The FASEB MARC Program will be sponsoring
ASHG 2008 Travel Awards to help support the
participation of faculty/mentors,
postdoctoral fellows, and students from
minority institutions (MIs) and historically
black colleges and universities (HBCUs). The
travel awards are funded up to $1,850 each
for travel-related expenses and meeting
registration. Travel awards are provided as
reimbursements after the meeting. The travel
awards are supported by a federal training
grant from the NIGMS/NIH; therefore, only
U.S. citizens and permanent residents of the
U.S. are eligible for the travel awards.
Underrepresented minority faculty, students,
and postdoctoral fellows from majority
institutions are also eligible to apply for
the travel awards. For travel award

Criteria
Applicants must submit an abstract to the
ASHG 2008 Annual Meeting in accordance with
the rules and regulations for submitting
abstracts. Deadline to submit abstracts:
June 19, 2008, 11:59 PM (Eastern
Daylight Time). Applicants must be members
of ASHG and can apply for membership on line
before submitting a travel award
application. Travel award applications
will be due on October 17, 2008. All ASHG
members who meet the citizenship/residency
requirements and are full-time
underrepresented minority graduate students,
postdoctoral fellows, or young faculty at
the assistant professor level at accredited
institutions are eligible to apply for the
awards.
